Did work pressure push scholars to ‘quit’ life? AND How to Stay Motivated in PhD / Research ?

Ways to Keep Motivated and excited you during your Ph.D.

Remember the day, why you joined for Ph.D. (something drove you..right?)

We should remember that a Ph.D. or Project work is not everything in life. Everyone work towards their passion, make friends, learn from each other, and should realize that mentors want them to excel and they remain open to a chat and help. Above all our families need us. Stay positive and work sincerely. If work is bringing you stress and not enjoying you have to find solutions. There are always alternate things you will enjoy. Talking with friends and close ones are important. Help is always around. Stress should be discussed. Finally, trust me Papers are not everything. We should publish only if we feel that the story is good and needs to be shared with peers. Reach out to your loved once if feeling stress. A couple of scholars said that they have discussed with their loved ones about their stress and sorted. Today those scholars are positive as they started enjoying what they do.

How to Stay Motivated in Research

Other then Research, Ph.D. teaches us to cope up with multiple stress at the same time.  Pressure/Stress comes many ways in Ph.D., it can be due to failure of exp., Manuscript rejection, PI-family-friends trio of pressure at the same time, Sometimes money matters a lot, and many other personal problems,  With minimal scholarship and a family, the money part added to the stress. So as a Ph.D. student, I believe ... All PhDs sometimes lose motivation, feel pressure about life by comparing others, can feel low, sometimes disheartening. Believe me, this is not all the problems in Ph.D., which I counted above but in the end, If you don't lose your hope, you will survive the Ph.D. journey and will fly high with your dream. Staying positive helped to focus and try ahead. One thing you learned for sure is that - You have to try to learn new skills and more challenging problems mean more opportunities. No. of papers does define you. So, all I say is to enjoy your work. Try to get one paper, but of better quality that makes you stand apart. If no paper, no problem..the skills will take you places - startups, teaching, alternate careers..build your passion

Taking admission in Ph.D. is a passion  but doing a Ph.D. is a tough process 🙏, and getting a Ph.D. degree is a Product ...that is you "Yourself"- Maneesh Lingwan (Ph.D. Scholar_IIT Mandi)

Role Of Mentorship is Important -

In the end, you carry "Dr" in front of your name. "Dr" would mean that one can take the pressure, deal with problems, and provide solutions. Just imagine how many Dr,s are trying hard to provide solutions for COVID-19. Similarly, scholars will address challenging problems...now and in the near future. That thought drives mentor to equip skills in each of you. Mentor see your strengths and weaknesses(we all have these). While ensuring to better channel the strengths, He works on your weakness in various ways.  Strengths that are being nurtured by Mentors are- Passion, sincerity, adaptable and open to learning new things, Scientific aptitude, analytical ability, communication skills,  writing, oral, Troubleshooting, Peer interaction, independent thinking and planning, Soft skills,...etc...Finally to make you expert in your own research domain. Dealing with problems is definitely the core of a Ph.D. and research labs should be focused on all the aspects of scientific aptitude and accuracy. Ph.D. student can take motivation from a mentor as can see improvement in their writing, presentation and scientific understanding. Unfortunately what Ph.D. can't tell us how to deal with life problems. The mentor may help us not just in science but when we are in other stress as well but we need to talk with him. I think graduate and postgraduate levels should better prepare for the challenges of Ph.D., and most importantly start accepting failure as a learning experience, because Ph.D. is 80% failing and understanding why we failed and then trying again.

Hang on...!!

After Ph.D...Other challenges in life are ready to welcome you 😇
